There should be an image here!How well would Microsoft do with developing Windows and related products, on the same kind of budget seen with the companies who produce various Linux distros? Exactly, we’d never see a release as Microsoft lacks that kind of open source infrastructure. While they do well in the software/hardware partnership area, they lack “real” community, ground swell involvement outside of selective beta testing.

The seemingly obvious fix of course, is to have Microsoft embrace an open source course to their development efforts. Considering their recent wave after wave of layoffs, it seems like a good idea if they’d like to keep pushing forward without further destroying morale.

This article expresses the opinion that MS should do more with open source, but do so in select spaces such as mobile or web related activities. Interesting thought, especially considering Microsoft once considered open source a cancer. You know, that terrible idea of a level playing field in which small businesses can compete with big ones.
