Organizations with their own internal social networks can use the technology in many different ways to enhance the professional development of staff. One way is to create virtual communities of learning for key training programs. The virtual communities become almost like extensions to the training programs.
So what would staff do within a community of learning? If you built a virtual community around a specific training program/course, individuals participating in the training could use the community to engage in dialogue and discussion with peers about any pre-work that needs to be completed in advance of the training. More importantly, after the training, participants can continue to discuss their learning, share ideas and real experiences as they relate to the training, and discuss practical application their learning. In some cases, this is where the real learning happens.
