On Tuesday evening a 10-year-old by the name of Jackie Evancho performed on the America’s Got Talent television program. Her performance was amazing considering her age, and she sang opera like a 30-year-old. Her mature voice left those at the live performance in awe, with mouths open as she sang. I know my jaw dropped while listening to her belt out the song and it did make me wonder. Was she really singing or just lip syncing?
At the end of her performance she received a standing ovation from not only the audience, but also from the three judges. What was surprising is that Piers Morgan, who normally is very conservative and will buzz contestants when their performance is less than stellar, was on his feet clapping with approval. If you missed the performance you can view it at the source link below.
On Wednesday evening the 10-year-old was voted by America to go onto the semi-finals. No surprise here. The youngster was shown on the Today Show, local news stations, and national news networks. The same questions were being asked on TV as well as on the Internet, challenging the youngster’s singing abilities and if she was really singing the performance live. Even Howie Long tried to assure the world that she was for real and asked the girl to sing a few bars for them, which she did easily.
Many of us remember Susan Boyle when she stunned an audience during Britain’s Got Talent. Ms. Boyle sang so powerfully that she also received a standing ovation and accolades from Simon Cowell, who is stingy when it comes to complimenting anyone who has performed in front of him, including being a judge for American Idol. If you missed Susan Boyle’s performance, I have also linked it.
What is it that makes some people so cynical? Is it because we believe that only those who are beautiful can sing? Or that a 10-year-old cannot wow us with a tremendous voice?
What do you think?
