The really interesting thing about this news is that what seems to destroy the virus is a protein. Not some inorganic compound or derived substance, but a protein.

"Using a $225,000 microscope, researchers have identified the key components of a protein called TRIM5a that destroys HIV in rhesus monkeys. The finding could lead to new TRIM5a-based treatments that would knock out HIV in humans, said senior researcher Edward M. Campbell, PhD, of Loyola University Health System."

The idea that we could soon be rid of a modern day plague is amazing. If I were working on this, I could not stop until the job was finished – hopefully the people devoted to this have a little of that spirit.
