When stem cell research was first undertaken, no one thought the study would cause nearly as much division in the nation and rancor among its educated citizens. The reasoning behind the study was to use science to better the lives of the living, and it was never intended to begin wars, either religious or philosophical.

“Responding to a court order issued a week ago, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) on Friday ordered intramural researchers studying human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) to shut down their experiments. NIH’s action — probably unprecedented in its history — is a response to a preliminary injunction on 23 August from US District Judge Royce Lamberth. The judge ruled that the Obama policy allowing NIH funding to be used to study hESC lines violates a law prohibiting the use of federal funds to destroy embryos.”

The sad thing is that so much trouble has been caused by something created to better everyone. The district court ruling has certainly made a mess of things, and action from the courts will waste money and time for many that need help.

Michael J. Fox and others counting on the cures coming from stem cells will no doubt be upset by the delays now in progress.
