There should be an image here! There are a few ways that you can add symbols to a document. You can use the Insert function within Word or you can use the Character Map included with Windows. Did you know that you can also add symbols using the keyboard? All you need to do is hold down the Alt key and type in the appropriate numbers using the numeric keypad. For example, to enter the copyright symbol, hold down the Alt key and press 0169. The tricky part is remembering the numbers associated with each symbol.

Here are the numbers for some of the more commonly used symbols:

  • Copyright (©) is Alt, 0, 1, 6, 9
  • Trademark ( ™ ) is Alt, 0, 1, 5, 3
  • One-half (½) is Alt, 0, 1, 8, 9
  • Registered (®) is Alt, 0, 1, 7, 4
  • Bullet ( • ) is Alt, 0, 1, 4, 9
  • Ellipsis (…) is Alt, 0, 1, 3, 3
  • “EN” Dash ( – ) is Alt, 0, 1, 5, 0
  • “EM” Dash ( — ) is Alt, 0, 1, 5, 1
