Is it because Apple is trying to move more in a slow economy? Could it be so that current stocks are closer to being exhausted, once the new models arrive next year?

I’d have to say it is likely both, as Apple doesn’t want to put the brakes on production, and certainly doesn’t want older version one units clogging the sales channel when the version 2 iPads come rolling in from the Orient.

The discount comes in just a day after the news of a newspaper, referred to as being a resource for accurate tech news in Asia, spilling the beans about the new version 2.0 of the iPad.

So, will $41 dollars on either model iPad get you to jump on one? Or is it not quite enough before you actually see the new features coming on the new iPad.

A small, informal survey in this area has many people waiting for one feature – a camera. That seems to be a deal breaker for many on the current model. If that really is the case, then no amount of discount will do.

CNN has a few other things that Apple is willing to discount right now –

The iPad was the No. 1 item on the electronics wish lists of kids ages 6 to 12, according to a survey from Nielsen. It was the fourth-most-sought-after item among kids older than 13. Computers, TVs and smartphones were higher on the list for the older kids.

"Given the continued pressure on consumer spending, it is difficult to know how robust a holiday season this will be for tech devices, but this survey suggests the electronics aisle will be heavily traveled this season," that survey said.

Apple also listed discounts for several other items on its website. All of these deals are good until the end of Friday only. Among them:

$101 off the 13-inch MacBook Air

$101 off the MacBook Pro

$101 off the iMac

$41 off the iPod Touch

$21 off the iPod Nano

The site is offering free shipping on orders of $50 or more. The online price cut highlights a trend toward online sales and discounts this holiday season, but the Apple discounts were also available in Apple’s retail stores Friday, according to two Apple store employees phoned by CNN.

So, if you want a deal, it looks like the rest of the day may be the opportune time to shop. otherwise, it’s back to the old prices, which were moving stuff semi-briskly anyway.

I want an iPad, but I am not in a hurry about it – I’ll be waiting for a revision 2 for several reasons, not the least of which is a certain wariness about some electronics version 1’s.
