There are multiple editions of Windows 7 so at first glance you may not know what edition is installed on your computer. There are a few different ways that you can find out what edition is installed. You can definitely find the information in the Windows Registry. You can use the winver.exe command to open the About Windows box. You can also find the information from the System window. I prefer using the System window as it’s much faster.

So many questions! So many answers!

To find out what edition of Windows 7 is running on your computer.

  1. Click on Start and then click Control Panel.
  2. Within the Windows Control Panel, click the System and Security link.
  3. Next click the System link to open the System window. Note: you can also type system in the Search field on the Start menu and press Enter to open the System window.

From the System window, you’ll find the Windows 7 edition information.

If you want to use the winver.exe command instead of the System window, simply click Start, type winver.exe in the Search field and press Enter. The About Windows dialog box appears which tells you what edition of Windows is installed.
