It’s easy for the Windows 7 Taskbar to become cluttered, particularly as you install new programs that add more icons. In addition, the Taskbar contains default system icons adding that add to the clutter, such as the volume control, power level, etc. If you use all these System icons, then it’s great that they’re right at your finger tips. However, if you don’t, there really is no point in having these icons take up valuable space on the Taskbar.

So if you don’t use many of the System icons and don’t like the clutter, you can prevent some of these icons from appearing on the Taskbar. To remove System icons in Windows 7, complete the simple steps described below.

Note: System icons in Windows 7 include the Clock, Volume, Network, Power, and Action Center.

  1. To the right of the Taskbar, hold your mouse pointer over the upward-pointing arrow.
  2. Click the Show hidden icons button when it appears.
  3. Click the Customize option.
  4. The Notification Area Icons window appears. Click the Turn system icons on or off option.
  5. Click the drop down arrow beside System icon you want to remove and click Off. Repeat this step for each additional icon that you want to remove.
