I think there is a common misconception that if you’re using software on OS X, it’s either paid software or perhaps freeware. Nothing could be further from the truth in that there are a number of fantastic titles for OS X carrying one of the various open source licenses. In this article, I will highlight some of the best open source applications for OS X and provide you with links so that you can try them out for yourselves. I think with most of the applications, you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

NeoOffice – If you’re thinking of buying Microsoft Office for the Mac, consider giving NeoOffice a first run before heading off to the store. It’s great software and very Mac friendly in how it handles dragging docs into the dock to open them. It hosts a number of other compatibility features as well.

AdiumPerhaps one of the best messenger clients for the OS X platform, Adium simply rocks. It provides you with all of the protocol access you could possibly need, plus it provides this in a package that is intuitive to use. It’s honestly the best instant messenger I have ever used for OS X, hands down.

Quicksilver – I use an application dock both with Linux and on OS X. It’s just something that I have become accustomed to. But this has begun to change in that my desire to use the mouse less and keyboard more had me looking for an alternative. This brought me to software called Quicksilver. More than a mere application launcher, Quicksilver is an intelligent keyboard launcher that can help you find things, sort text/email/etc, plus a whole lot more.

Cyberduck – Who says FTP isn’t sexy? With Cyberduck, it’s never going to be more usable or attractive than this. In short, this is perhaps amongst the top FTP apps I have used and I love it. What makes Cyberduck something worth looking into is that it’s much more than a mere FTP client. It’s also a great way to connect to various cloud services such as Amazon S3.

There are other apps I am sure, but these above are my personal favorites. Once you try them for yourselves, I’m sure that you too will agree that they are awesome!
