Today, Google quietly launched a new Google Labs feature called Google Talk Guru – an experimental chat bot designed to allow Google Talk users to get answers to simple questions directly from Google on any application that supports Google Talk. Users can get sports scores, the weather, calculations, currency conversions, definitions, translations, web search results, and help results. The bot takes the same commands as you would use in the search box at Google.com – now you just use them in your Google Talk chat client.

Here’s how to ask a question in Google Talk by using Google Talk Guru:

  1. Sign into a chat client that supports Google Talk
  2. Send a chat invitation to guru (at) googlelabs.com
  3. Find guru in your contact list and send chat queries to guru using the examples below:

Sport scores: score arsenal
Weather: weather Nairobi
Calculate: 123 * 45
Currency: 120 KES to USD
Definition: define laptop
Translation: translate earth to French
Web result: web Mount Kenya
Help: help translate

Have you used the new Google Talk Guru? Is Google’s new bot an innovative new way to “Google it” – or just another quirky Google Lab that won’t last?
