Blizzard, one of the largest and most recognized brands in the gaming world, has released a statement detailing unauthorized and illegal access which had been made to its internal network. It’s believed that this access may have resulted in some customer information being made available to the unauthorized party.

According to the report:

Some data was illegally accessed, including a list of email addresses for global users, outside of China. For players on North American servers (which generally includes players from North America, Latin America, Australia, New Zealand, and Southeast Asia) the answer to the personal security question, and information relating to Mobile and Dial-In Authenticators were also accessed. Based on what we currently know, this information alone is NOT enough for anyone to gain access to accounts.

Blizzard will begin advising customers using its North American servers to change their password and update other security information over the next few days. This should be a precaution as the violation isn’t believed to have given the hacker enough information to access or otherwise compromise accounts.

It’s a good practice to change passwords used on cloud and other Web-based services regularly. Blizzard, like any online retailer that processes financial transactions, is a target for these types of attacks on a regular basis. While Blizzard certainly doesn’t have a spotless record for account security, this is an isolated incident.

Even still, take a moment today to update your information (even if you don’t play a Blizzard game at this time) as well as change the passwords on any other accounts using the same login and password on other services.

Blizzard states that there is no evidence that any financial information was compromised.
