Activity trackers have been generating a lot of interest in the public since their appearance in the market. With their weight loss assistance features and daily activity tracking, they make weight loss activities much easier due to motivating metrics and data-driven insights. With the recent release of several brands of wearable activity tracker devices, there have been plenty of questions as to which device is the best option for the money. We spent some time with two devices in particular, the Fitbit One and the BodyMedia FIT. In terms of Fitbit vs. BodyMedia, which is the better device? We weighed the differences between the two and summarized our findings below.

The basic BodyMedia FIT model comes in at $119 ($89.22 at the time of this writing), or $149 (currently $116.23) for the LINK version, which includes added features, such as a wireless sync. The Fitbit One comes in at $99 ($80.81 as of this writing).

Fitbit Vs. BodyMedia: Functionality

Both the Fitbit and BodyMedia devices have comparable functionality, but the Fitbit One has a little extra. Both devices record a large amount of data with their onboard sensors, keeping track of various activities, such as steps walked, sleeping, eating, calories burned, etc.

In terms of data syncing, The BodyMedia FIT requires a USB connection for syncing unless you pay extra for the LINK version, which features a Bluetooth sync function. The Fitbit One syncs via a USB connection that works a little differently: you plug in a USB dongle to your computer, and it syncs passively when you get close enough to it. The Fitbit One also supports Bluetooth connectivity without an additional charge.

Both devices also support a Web service that allows you to view and work with collected data, but the BodyMedia Fit requires a $6.95 a month charge, whereas the Fitbit One offers a free service. However, the BodyMedia Fit does offer a data export service for free, and the Fitbit One charges $50 a year for a similar service.

The BodyMedia Fit comes in the form of a larger unit that you attach by wristband. The Fitbit One, on the other hand, comes in the form of a tiny unit that you can store in a pocket or clip to an article of clothing. Most users prefer the low-profile size of the Fitbit One as it doesn’t get annoying to wear, and you don’t have to answer as many questions from people due to the unit’s visibility. However, you do have to be careful with the Fitbit One. Due to the unit’s size, it is easy to forget it is in your pocket, and you can lose it or accidentally run it through the wash, so you have to be mindful of it. The Fitbit One also features an additional digital display that is useful.

Fitbit Vs. BodyMedia: Conclusion

Both activity trackers do exactly what they are supposed to do, and they do it well: they provide reams of data for understanding your fitness habits, as well as a clinically proved motivation to diet and exercise more effectively. When it comes to the Fitbit vs. BodyMedia debate however, we choose the Fitbit One due to its plethora of features, lower overall price (factoring in BodyMedia’s monthly fee for its Web service vs. Fitbit’s free service), and small, sleek frame.
