Panzer Dragoon Saga, Sega Saturn's Four-Disc RPG, Now Runs Natively on Windows PCs in Widescreen, Built From Your Own Discs

devMiyax, the developer of the Yaba Sanshiro Saturn emulator, released a builder that turns your own Panzer Dragoon Saga disc images into a recompiled Windows game with 16:9 and 21:9 modes, no slowdown and no wobbly polygons.

The page calls it “AZEL -Panzer Dragoon RPG-” and sums it up as “Recompiled for PC.” The process is three steps: choose your disc, confirm, build. It accepts the Japanese release (GS-9076 V1.001) or the US and European Panzer Dragoon Saga (MK-81307) as .cue/.bin, .chd or .iso images. “No game data is included. You need your own Saturn discs,” the page says.

The feature list reads like a wish list for a 1998 game. “High resolution. Widescreen. No slowdown. No wobbly polygons.” There’s a CRT mode with four shaders, remappable keyboard and gamepad controls, 10 save-state slots, and all four discs switchable from a menu instead of a disc swap. The builder is version 1.1.1, for 64-bit Windows only.

devMiyax waited until the whole game worked before shipping it. The October 24 post said so:

“We’ve confirmed Azel Panzerdragoon RPG(Panzer Dragoon Saga) runs all the way to the ending, so we’re releasing it,” devMiyax wrote. “I hope this wonderful game lives on forever.”

It’s not the only effort to free the game from the Saturn. In February, Time Extension reported on a separate open-source recompilation by a developer named yaz0r, then “semi-playable up until the Arachnoth battle.” The game was “Released exclusively on the Sega Saturn back in 1998,” and Time Extension wrote that “because Sega no longer has access to the original source code, it has never been remastered or republished.” yaz0r was more careful, saying his project “was started under the impression that the code was lost.”

A dash means the source didn’t say.

What the page doesn’t say: a frame rate or output resolution, whether a Mac or Linux build is coming, or how the recompilation was done. There’s no changelog for what changed between earlier builds and 1.1.1.

A full-length Saturn RPG recompiled for PC sidesteps emulation for anyone who still owns the discs. The next test is whether devMiyax applies the same tools to other Saturn games, and whether Sega says anything at all.
