Apple's M6 14-inch MacBook Pro adds two CPU cores and Wi-Fi 7, and now starts at $1,999 with a 1TB drive

Apple's entry 14-inch MacBook Pro moves to the M6 chip with a 12-core CPU, a 12-core GPU and Wi-Fi 7, keeps the 32GB memory ceiling and three Thunderbolt 4 ports, and starts at $1,999, up from $1,599 for the M5 model.

The press release, dated October 27, leads with the chip. “The 12-core CPU, with two more cores than before, brings blazing-fast single- and multithreaded performance,” Apple wrote, and the GPU likewise has “two additional cores.”

Apple’s own comparison numbers against last year’s M5 model sit mostly at 1.3x. It lists “up to 1.3x faster” Xcode project builds, “up to 1.3x faster” Blender renders with ray tracing, and “up to 1.2x faster” image processing in Affinity. Graphics overall are “up to 30 percent faster,” and on-device AI workloads “up to 25 percent faster.” The footnote says those tests ran against an M5 model with 32GB of memory and a 4TB drive.

Against the M1 13-inch MacBook Pro from 2020, the numbers get much bigger: “up to 2.5x faster project build performance when compiling code in Xcode” and up to 11.7x in Blender. Apple says plainly who it’s pitching. “There’s never been a better time for customers to upgrade from a previous-generation MacBook Pro with Apple silicon or an Intel-based Mac.”

The rest of the machine is the one you know. Apple’s spec page lists the same 14.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR display, the same 72.4-watt-hour battery rated for “Up to 24 hours video streaming,” the same 3.4 pounds, and “Three Thunderbolt 4 (USB-C) ports.” The press release gives memory as “16GB of unified memory standard, configurable up to 32GB,” the same range as the M5 model.

Wireless is the visible change. The spec page lists an “Apple N1 wireless networking chip” with “Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be)” and “Bluetooth 6.” The M5 model’s tech specs list “Wi-Fi 6E (802.11ax)” and “Bluetooth 5.3.”

From Apple’s current spec page (M6 and M5 Pro), the M5 tech specs, the M1 13-inch tech specs, and the launch prices in Apple’s M5 announcement and 2020 M1 announcement. Rival brands aren’t in this table, since the question for most buyers here is which Mac to replace.

The price row is the one the press release doesn’t put side by side. The M5 model launched at “$1,599 (U.S.)” with a 512GB drive. The M6 model starts at “$1,999 (U.S.)” and its smallest drive is 1TB.

What Apple didn’t say. The press release quotes “higher memory bandwidth up to 170GB/s.” The spec page splits that out: the 16GB configuration lists “16GB unified memory (153GB/s memory bandwidth),” the same figure as the M5. Only “24GB or 32GB unified memory” gets 170GB/s. The release also leaves the M5’s $1,599 starting price out of its value pitch, and it doesn’t say what a 512GB M6 would have cost, because there isn’t one.

What it means for anyone buying Macs for a team. If you’re replacing M1 or Intel machines, Apple’s numbers for that jump are large, and the M1’s two ports become three plus HDMI and an SD slot. If your people are on M5, the gain is the core count and the radio, for a machine that costs more to start. Ordering the 24GB tier is the way to actually get the bandwidth Apple is advertising.

Why now. Apple’s current spec page lists one wireless section for every 14-inch model, the N1 chip with Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, so the entry model no longer trails the M5 Pro and M5 Max on radios.

A laptop that’s the same size, weight and battery rating as last year’s is a fine thing to be, and the fleet buyer’s real decision is the price. The base model now costs $400 more than the one it replaces, with twice the storage, and anyone who was going to order 1TB anyway should compare those two configurations instead of the two starting prices.

Apple’s 24 hours is its video streaming test. Web browsing is rated at 16.
