Kobo Clara BW vs. the new Kindle: $10 buys waterproofing and warmer light
The 6-inch Kobo and basic Kindle make different trades. Paperwhite costs more to keep Amazon books beside the bath.

Ten dollars separates these starting prices. The more useful difference appears when the reader goes beside the bathtub: Kobo gives the Clara BW IPX8 water protection, while the basic Kindle’s new flush front doesn’t add that protection.
Kobo also includes ComfortLight PRO, which adjusts the light’s color temperature. Amazon’s comparison table marks both adjustable warm light and IPX8 waterproofing absent on the basic model. A smooth front is easy to spot in a product photo. A light you can make warmer at bedtime takes more reading of the specification sheet.
The numbers below are US listed starting prices, checked November 1, before optional accessories and configuration differences. These are manufacturer specifications, rather than a hands-on comparison.
| Purchase difference | Kobo Clara BW | Kindle, 2026 basic | Kindle Paperwhite, 2026 | Kobo Clara Colour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starting price | $159.99 | $149.99 | $199.99 | $179.99 |
| Water protection | IPX8 | No | Waterproof | IPX8 |
| Adjustable warm light | ComfortLight PRO | No | Yes | ComfortLight PRO |
| Color book content | No | No | No | Yes |
The Clara Colour adds color content for $20 over the BW. Amazon’s description of the basic Kindle’s edge-to-edge color refers to its physical housing; the separately named Colorsoft is the color-reading model. Amazon calls the new construction a “flush-front display.”
Battery figures don’t establish a useful capacity ratio here. Manufacturers’ advertised weeks depend on reading and lighting assumptions; this comparison hasn’t measured either device through an identical workload. There isn’t evidence here for claiming one lasts twice as long.
The flush front changes what the Kindle looks and feels like. The remaining decision is which books, reading spot and light setting the owner needs it to accommodate.
