Sony's $85 See-Through PS5 Controllers Show the Insides, While the Matching $75 Console Covers Hide Them
The PS5 Prism Collection brings back late-'90s clear plastic in Flare Orange, Emerald Green and Graphite Gray. The DualSense shell is clear front and back; the console covers sit over the console's own inner body. Pre-orders open November 10, and it ships starting February 4, 2027.

The announcement came from Isabelle Tomatis, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s VP of global marketing, on the PlayStation Blog. Sony’s Leo Cardoso pitched it as nostalgia on purpose: “We know how much our fans have been looking forward to the return of transparent controllers,” and the set is meant to “bring back the iconic see-through trend of the late ’90s.”
The controller is the part that goes all the way. Satoshi Aoyagi says “the high-gloss clear finish extends across the back of the controller,” which gives “a look at the technology that powers” it. The console covers are a different story. As Engadget’s Lawrence Bonk points out, they sit over the console, so you see the PS5’s own body through them, not its insides. He also notes Sony first tried translucent controllers back in the PS1 era.
Here’s what the clear premium costs next to a regular controller:
| Prism DualSense | Standard DualSense | Prism console cover | |
|---|---|---|---|
| US price | $84.99 | $74.00 at PlayStation Direct | $74.99 |
| UK price | £74.99 | — | £64.99 |
| What you see | Internals, front and back | Nothing | The console’s own body |
| Sold by | Not stated as direct-only | — | “Exclusively directly from PlayStation where available” |
| Colors | Flare Orange, Emerald Green, Graphite Gray | Not compared | Same three |
Pre-orders start November 10 at 10am local time, which is 7am PT in the US on direct.playstation.com, and the gear ships “starting on February 4, 2027.”
What they didn’t say. The post doesn’t name which PS5 models the covers fit, a question that matters now that there’s more than one PS5 shape. It doesn’t say whether the Prism controller differs from a standard DualSense in anything but the shell, or whether a matching DualSense Edge is coming.
What it means for you. The controller is a $10.99 premium over a standard DualSense at Sony’s own store, for a look and nothing Sony says is new inside. The covers are the riskier buy: they’re sold only by Sony, and a clear shell over an opaque console reads as tinted plastic, not a window.
The February date puts the launch well after the holidays, so this is a collector’s set more than a gift-season push. The open question for anyone with an older PS5 is whether the covers fit theirs at all, and Sony hasn’t said.
