The $119 Waffle Home Brings Back the Family Phone, With a One-Contact Free Plan

Wi-Fi calling and a parent-managed contact list offer a smaller first phone, but extra contacts change the bill.

Calling grandma is becoming a product category again. Waffle Home makes the family phone portable around the house, while the parent manages who can reach it.

The maker calls it “The screen-free first phone for home.” The useful distinction is where the call works: household Wi-Fi. A child needing calls away from that network is shopping for a different device and service.

Waffle’s plans page lists Waffle-to-Waffle calls and one approved safe contact on the free tier. Home Plus adds extended contacts and international calling at $9.99 monthly. A ten-day trial does not make that an included lifetime feature.

Here are the differences that decide the job, using the makers’ own pages. The cellular Waffle Go, Gabb Phone 4, and Bark Phone cover more mobile use cases.

Choice Waffle Home Waffle Go Gabb Phone 4 Bark Phone
Device price on maker page $119 $169 $249.99 $15/month for 24 months
Connectivity for calls Wi-Fi Cellular Cellular plan required Cellular plan required
Service starting point Free; expanded contacts $9.99/month $17.99/month Separate Gabb plan From $29/month
Apps No app store No apps Preloaded apps, no app store Starter has none; advanced plans can allow downloads

There is no single winner hiding in those columns. A home calling device and a smartphone with parent-controlled expansion answer different family requests.

The purchase question is whether the family needs a phone that stays with the house or one that follows the child out the door. Answer that before comparing the colors.
